Channel 4’s 4iP invests in Patient Opinion
4iP, Channel 4’s digital investment fund, and Screen Yorkshire, the regional screen agency for Yorkshire and Humber, today announce a joint investment in Patient Opinion.
Patient Opinion (www.patientopinion.org.uk) is an online platform where the public can give their thoughts, comments and feedback on local hospitals, Doctors surgeries and health provision direct to the relevant NHS Trust. With almost a million page views each month, Patient Opinion has already demonstrated the public’s desire to their share feedback not just with other patients but also the decision makers in the NHS who can actually make a difference. And with all the main political parties promising patients greater choice of NHS treatment centres the ability to get accurate information about how treatment can vary in different locations is becoming ever more important.
The joint investment by 4iP and Screen Yorkshire, will enable Patient Opinion to build its brand and increase market share to become the online destination for independent patient feedback and informed choice. Over the next twelve months the funding will be used to review the brand and user interface as well as launch a high profile national marketing campaign aimed at raising user awareness in the most cost-effective way. Yorkshire Companies Join Forces to Launch Groundbreaking Mobile Phone App
Digital media companies from across the region have demonstrated world leading innovation through a collaboration to develop the first ever audio-only game, built solely for the iPhone® and iPod Touch®. Unique mobile phone app Aurifi TM (pronounced ‘or-if-eye') allows players to interact with sound in the same way that video games let them interact with graphic objects, using music theory, digital sound design techniques and even the neuroscience of perception. Aurifi was designed and produced by York game design company Punk Pie in collaboration with Bradford iPhone developer Four Door Lemon, supported by Screen Yorkshire and Leeds digital agency twentysix.
Aurifi, available to purchase from the iTunes App Store now, is unique among iPhone/iPod Touch games in that it can be played without users ever having to open their eyes. It allows players to progress as they explore a vast array of original sound components and audio effects, blending hundreds of bespoke musical phrases to create thousands of different permutations. Using headphones, players explore a sonic environment and pick up the skills needed to interact with Aurifi in a highly original manner. They manipulate audio effects by bouncing, steering and batting them through the three-dimensional soundscape.
Screen Yorkshire supported the production of Aurifi through its Business Investment Fund, supported by Yorkshire Forward.
Aurifi is available to purchase on the Apple App Store now!

Finger Industries have moved on!
After winning Bank of Scotland and Oxford University Press contracts, the continuation of Lloyds TSB plus numerous animation jobs including Mamas & Papas and HSBC, groundbreaking animation and illustration company Finger Industries decided they needed more space so sadly left the lovely Site Gallery mid-June and headed to the spacious and friendly offices in The Cube!
With plenty of extra room for their soon-to-be-7 in-house Finger team even had enough space for a new server room and large meeting area, complete with swanky new red leather sofa!. They also immediately fell in love with BIG windows, everyone likes a BIG window!
They are busy still emptying random boxes of wires and paper but other than that are pretty much settled and happy!
Managing Director Marcus Kenyon said, “When the time came for Finger Industries to expand, The Cube was the most logical place to expand into. It’s a well managed building with plenty of room, very secure, outside decking area and plenty of light with the big windows! Plus with the added benefit of still being in the heart of the CIQ, it’s all rather great actually!”

Midsummer Madness - yes really! @ Cupola Gallery
As The Under The Bed Sale is so eagerly awaited all year (queues at the door and people booking time off work to attend) we have finally bowed to pressure to have another sale event - but this time mid summer - hence 'Mid Summer Madness!'
We are therefore putting a call out to artists (from all disciplines) to send in work for this exhibition/sale. Like 'The Under The Bed Sale' - Midsummer Madness will not be selected but needs to be appropriate to Cupola - therefore contemporary in nature and original work only. Prints of original work are not accepted (unless they are cards or postcards from artists currently represented by the gallery and authorised by Cupola management).
The concept behind the sale is as follows:
Older/earlier/out of date work which artists no longer wish to exhibit is given the opportunity to be both viewed and sold. This allows for a revenue stream to be created for the artists without undermining the current market price or value of their work. Customers are often intimidated by the perception that prices in galleries are high or too high for them and this sale encourages many more visitors into the gallery (in all areas, not just the sale). It is a fabulous way of increasing the audience for contemporary art as well as increasing sales. Many new visitors visit the gallery for the first for the sale and then often turn into regulars!
SO, the rules are as follows:
Work needs to be original and not current (not created within the last few years).
Maximum retail price is £300 (though there has been a little bit of flexibility with this).
Prices need to be at least 50% of the original selling price (if they have ever been on sale)
Items can be slight seconds, print proofs, maquettes etc
Work in any media (painting, printmaking, glass, ceramics, sculpture, textiles, furniture, photography etc) Items do not need to be framed or mounted Large items need to be confirmed & accepted by management (due to space restrictions)
Over 30 items (unless very small) need to be confirmed & accepted by management (due to space restrictions) No liability is accepted for damage
For more info contact Karen Sherwood on Karen@cupolagallery.com

Cliffhanger Sat 3rd and Sun 4th July - Millhouses Park
Video from last year's event: www.cliff-hanger.co.uk/gallery/?year=2010&id=117
Cliffhanger, now in its 4th year, has quickly grown into the UK's biggest outdoor event for outdoor people with Climbing, Kayaking, Orienteering, Caving, Fell Running, Adventure Racing, Scuba Diving, Mountain Biking, Mountain Boarding, Kite Flying, Angling, Bushcraft, Parkour, Slacklining, and plenty, plenty more on offer.
Once in the event (£5 for adults, kids under 16 free) virtually all of the activities, demonstrations and competitions are free to watch or take part in - the aim being to inspire and enthuse, then provide the facility to have-a-go. The formula has proved to be so effective that over the past three years 100% of visitors said that they would come again and would recommend to a friend.
Brand new for 2010 is the Big Shakeout from long term Cliffhanger supporters Alpkit, who will set up camp on the edge of Sheffield, just minutes from the Peak District National Park and a short walk from the festival. Facilities will include camping and a central entertainments marquee. You will be able to cook your own food on the communal BBQs, purchase cooked food from the kitchen, drinks from a licensed bar, watch films on Friday night and boogie to live music on Saturday night. Between all of this we expect you to make some time for climbing, walking and biking in the Peak District, and of course, checking out the main event.
More details about Cliffhanger are available by visiting the web site that will be regularly up-dated:

Questioning Digital Inclusion Research Symposium, Sheffield, 13th-14th July 2010
Questioning Digital Inclusion" (QDI) is a two-day symposium at Access Space as part of Sheffield Hallam University's ongoing Cultural, Communication and Computing Research Institute (C3RI) research into the social, cultural and economic impacts of ICTs.
Access Space is the UK's longest-running free, open access digital engagement project and provides a creative community media lab. It supports a diverse community of participants, many of whom have been subject to social or economic exclusion. This event will bring academics and digital inclusion researchers together with grassroots organisations delivering digital inclusion outcomes.
The Digital Region project places South Yorkshire at the UK forefront of next generation network connectivity. Its objectives include stimulating economic growth, providing better public sector digital infrastructure and enabling "transformational services" to be delivered. However, these objectives are unattainable if significant sections of the population remain disconnected from broadband networks and disengaged from technology.
Therefore many organisations in the region are increasingly concerned to assess, measure and understand digital engagement and digital inclusion as social, cultural and economic processes.
While it exists as a key element of EU policy, "digital inclusion" is ill-defined and seems to encompass diverse, perhaps contradictory objectives. The term is used to validate a wide range of policy initiatives and technological innovations. Benefits of digital inclusion have been cited such as:
• Enhancing opportunity for individuals and organisations

Pecha Kucha Sheffield #02 Event 22nd July 2010
Following on from the success of the first ever Pecha Kucha in Sheffield in April, we're pleased to announce details for the second event.
The theme this time will be 'Enthusiasm' which comes from the ancient Greek meaning 'Enthusios' or the 'God Within'. We have lined up a nice eclectic mix of speakers for the evening, which includes Greg Povey (takes a left-field approach to life), Erica Packington (self-proclaimed geek-girl), Deborah Egan (she knows her stuff), Year Four Creative (young product designer types), and a few others...
As per the other Pecha Kucha Nights which go on around the world, it's going to be an interesting night. And of course it's all about having a relaxed and enjoyable evening...
It’s £5 in advance or £7 on the door (if not sold out). We expect a high demand for this event as quite a few people couldn't get into the launch event, so get your tickets in advance! Follow us on Twitter, 'PKNSheff'.

Exploiting Digital Tools Workshop
Digital tools play a key role in driving innovation in today’s creative industries. But what new tools are on the horizon and how will creative businesses harness them to drive exciting new business opportunities? What will creative professionals - from architects to fashion designers to games developers and others - be using to create and produce content in the future? How can digital tools cut production costs and improve efficiencies? What can the different creative sectors learn from each other?
The Creative Industries KTN would like to invite you to contribute and influence our latest Beacon Project, Exploiting Digital Tools, which will examine the potential these tools have to transform the creative and production processes.
We are holding a workshop at the Electric Works, Sheffield on Tuesday 20th July 2010. This is a unique opportunity to share your expertise and to influence this exciting project along with other innovators from across the creative and technology sectors. Working with leading innovation company ‘Whatif’ we will be carrying out some initial research including an online survey and expert interviews. The workshops will then create and validate a number of future scenarios.
The event is also a great networking opportunity to meet people from across the creative industries. We will show you some of the digital tools and how they are being used in different creative sectors. This work will link closely with future funding opportunities from the Technology Strategy Board. If you would like to help shape the future of digital tools in the UK by attending this workshop email events@citin.org

Talk About Skills!
27th July – Hull, 12.30 – 17.30, Hull Truck Theatre
28th July – Leeds, 12.30 -17.30, Patrick Studios, East Street Arts
The National Skills Academy (NSA) for the Creative and Cultural sectors has commissioned CIDA to run two events, one in Leeds and the other in Hull, to bring together employers, practitioners and freelance workers in the sector in the region, to talk about skills. You’ll hear about the vital work that the NSA is doing to assist us all in maintaining high standards of performance in every aspect of what we do. And you’ll hear about some new and existing initiatives that are aimed at specific sectors (e.g. Technical Theatre; Dance; Music). Just as importantly, you’ll have the opportunity to help identify what’s good, what we need more of and what doesn’t yet exist at all. Working with East Street Arts, Yorkshire Dance, Rural Arts and Higher Rhythm as our initial steering group, we’ll be aiming to respond to the findings from these two events to help increase the quality, relevance and accessibility of continuing professional development for our sector. As we move into more difficult financial times, it is more important than ever that we collectively sustain our commitment to CPD – and our objective here is to help you do that in a way that maximises resources and helps you as organisations and as individuals get the best possible value for money. But we need you to help us do that – so do please come and join us for lunch and an afternoon’s workshop so that we can all move forward on this together.
Please contact adam@cida.org for further information or to register your interest.

Side by Side is a user-led community drama group which aims to promote intercultural understanding, integration and cohesion between people of ALL social, ethnic, cultural and faith backgrounds, whilst raising awareness about the positive contributions that refugees and asylum seekers can make. We use drama as a tool for building confidence, developing self-expression and building friendships, as well as exploring themes that are important and relevant to our members. In the current climate of intercultural hostilities, we offer proof that people of many different backgrounds can work together - from the bottom-up - in a unified, cohesive way to create something positive...and fun!
Communicatease is an expression of the group's collective voice, and comes from months of devising, exploring and sharing ideas. It is a collection of stories in all their diverse colours, from traditional folktales to personal experiences, from fantasy to the downright bizarre!
