Asset Transfer and Regeneration

Beam  An organisation based in Wakefield dedicated to the improvement of the public realm offering services such as community consultation, design awareness and training, research, strategy etc.

Development Trusts Association  Leading network of community enterprise practitioners which also helps people set up development trusts.  Currently running a programme Supporting Asset Transfer in Yorkshire & the Humber 2010-2013 offering advice, guidance and support on the transfer of under-used land and buildings from the public sector to community ownership and management.

Business Link  Government sponsored, free business advice and support service, available online and through local advisers.

Buy4Sheffield  Website to promote understanding and business relationships between Sheffield's public sector organisations and suppliers of goods and services. 

Creative Barnsley  Promotes the creative sector and provides support in the form of networking events, occasional short courses and training and runs HIVE GALLERY and CB Hive Studios at Elsecar Heritage Centre.

Enterprising Barnsley  Free access for Barnsley businesses to small business coaching, office space & enterprise hubs and networking events.

Inspiral Specialist support for businesses in the creative and digital industries, includes an online portal to access business start up advice, grant finderand business growth tools.  Based in Sheffield.

Smarta.com  Online business advice and networking resource for small businesses, headed up by successful entrepreneur Shaa Wasmund.

Supply2.gov.uk  Official government lower-value contract opportunity portal which provides small businesses with visibility of public sector contract opportunities typically below £100,000.  Initial registration is free for basic information with chargeable upgrades.  Opportunities on view are national and across a broad spectrum, but there are plenty of public art, video production and other relevant posts which may be of interest.  They also run training events on tendering skills.

T-Shirts and Suits:  A Guide to the Business of Creativity  Free eBook written by creative business adviser and creative industries consultant David Parrish, who also writes the T-Shirts and Suits blog and has created the T-Shirts and Suits Creative Enterprise Network.  The book offers practical advice on how to merge creative passion with business ideas.

Whippet on the Wire  On-line creative network for companies and individuals in the creative and digital sector in Yorkshire and the Humber and beyond.  The site is powered by 4iP and supported by Screen Yorkshire, offering you the opportunity to showcase your talent, make new contacts, flag up events and share knowledge and experience.

Community Spaces  Helps community groups in England create or improve green, open spaces to enhance people's quality of life.

Digital Heroes Awards  An annual award rather than a funding pot, run by TalkTalk with Citizens Online to celebrate outstanding individuals working within community groups or charities who use digital technology to bring about social change.

The Idlewild Trust  Supports registered charities concerned with the advancement of education, the encouragement of the performing arts and the preservation for the benefit of the public of lands, buildings and other objects of beauty or historic interest in the UK.

Artsbowl  Creative courses hub where you can post courses you have on offer or find courses you fancy doing all over the UK and abroad.

Creative Choices  Online service from Creative and Cultural Skills to provide tools, knowledge and networks to individuals and businesses to get in, and get on, in the creative industries and cultural sector.

News, Policy and Politics

Community Development Foundation (DCF)  Non-departmental public body supported by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) which "aims to lead community development analysis and strategy in order to empower people to influence decisions that affect their lives."  They work across the community sector, offer training, advice, consultancy and funding, undertake research and produce publications.

Creative Boom  A national web-based magazine for the creative industries set up by a young graphic designer which also features regional hub versions with Leeds, Manchester, Nottingham and Sheffield taking part.  Features news, jobs, blogs, galleries and more. 

Creative and Cultural Skills  Sector Skills Council for Advertising, Crafts, Cultural Heritage, Design, Literature, Music, Performing Arts and Visual Arts.  As well as providing strategic information on these sectors the website also provides information on qualifications and skills and links to their Creative Choices initiative which offers tools for building a career in the relevant sectors.

Creative Sheffield  Sheffield's city development company charged with delivering the city's economic transformation.  Website includes a Creative and Digital Industries (CDI) directory.

Local Government Improvement and Development  Supports improvement and innovation in local government.  Works with local authorities and their partners to develop and share good practivce.  Their website has a page which is a good start to answering the question What are the creative industries?

Media Guardian  Web page of the newspaper's Media section.  Pick up the link to their jobs page too, a source of creative, media and marketing employment oportunities.

Office for National Statistics - Neighbourhood Statistics pages The place to go for statistics on the area your project or business is in, which can be helpful for funding applications, evaluation or market research and it is as easy as entering your postcode.  You can find out which Super Output Area you are in and what the levels of deprivation are for your area under headings such as income, employment, education, skills and training.

Planning Aid  This is a scheme funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government which works with people and communities to help them influence changes to their local areas by learning to understand and use the planning system.  Support starts with free initial advice to all and can go on to more detailed support which may have to be paid for depending on eligibility.

SEYH (Social Enterprise Yorkshire and the Humber)  Represents, promotes and helps drive forward the social enterprise sector in Yorkshire and the Humber.  Full membership is free to social enterprises entitling you to vote at AGMs and nominate directors.  Has a useful website, including the opportunity for SEs to post job advertisements.

Workspace for Creatives

Cube  The CIQ Agency's own managed office space housing a small cluster of creative businesses in Sheffield's first live/work model.

CB HIVE Studios  Artists' studios attached to HIVE Gallery at Elsecar Heritage Centre near Barnsley, the contemporary artspace managed by Creative Barnsley feraturing a diverse rolling programme of contemporary visual art.

Create @ Burton Street  Spaces in newly refurbished Victorian buildings in Sheffield comprising managed workspace (including wet space), hot-desking facilities, conference and meeting room, cafe, bar, reataurant and gym.

Digital Media Centre (DMC)  State-of-the-art office space, virtual office packages, meeting and conference facilities in Barnsley centre.

Inhabit  Commissioned by Arts Council England connecting creative professionals looking for workspace with owners of available property across the UK. The website contains resources, a toolkit on creative workspace and a community so that you can search and download information, upload resources for others to view and engage in forum discussions.

Workstation  Flagship creative business centre in Sheffield's CIQ.  Provides offices, meeting rooms, creative facilities, exhibition space and virtual office services.
